Sinusitis Symptoms

The sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull bone. Just like the nose, they are lined with mucous membrane. This mucous membrane, an infection called a sinus infection (sinusitis).

Acute sinusitis symptoms

The acute sinus infection is one of the common diseases. Usually it is good to handle and heals off without complications again.

What causes acute sinus infections?

It is caused by a viral infection (common cold). Also infection with bacteria may be the cause or in addition.

The inflammation begins in the nose (rhinitis). Nose and sinuses through narrow canals are connected; the infection spreads easily on the adjacent cavities. Rhinitis and sinusitis are not always clear to separate and summarized as rhinosinusitis.

Acute sinusitis symptoms

Typical symptoms of acute inflammation are sinus headaches, for example, in the forehead over the nose, between and under the eyes. In addition there is a distinct feeling of pressure that intensified in the bending over. The nose feels "plugged" and the sense of smell is impaired. Fever may occur.

Chronic sinus infection

Inflammation lasts longer or it comes to more than four episodes of illness each year, without that there are symptom-free intervals in between; it's a chronic sinus infection.

What causes chronic sinus infections?

The cause is perhaps in anatomy to search, for example, a curvature of the nasal septum or benign growths of Mucosa (nasal polyps). You can cause that the sinuses no longer sufficient "ventilation" and secretions more poorly towards nose to drain.
